LA LA LA

LA LA LA HUMAN STEPS redefined modern dance when the Montreal group attracted the world's attention in the mid 80s. The incomparable Louise Lecavalier, principal dancer and muse of company director and choreographer Edouard Lock, embodied a physical strength which could match and then surpass that of any male dancer. She was an inspiration- hurtling across the stage in defiance of gravity, her bleached dreads flying. Edouard allowed me unrestricted access to photograph two early shows- in ‘83 and '85. These photos are from the 1985 show- "Human Sex". Fittingly, I was several months pregnant and practically succumbed from the excitement and exertion needed to track the dancers! The show, incorporated rock elements and so I was given the unheard of opportunity to use flash from side stage during the performance. This allowed me to experiment with open flash- a technique which enables the photographer to combine a slow shutter speed with flash- thereby freezing certain elements while also allowing ambient light and movement to become part of the image. It would be impossible to achieve this effect without flash- so I was grateful! I often use this technique in my music shots, to capture the excitement and spontaneity of a performance.

Rock music has continued to be an integral part of Lock’s work. In 1988, Édouard choreographed a piece for David Bowie, and Amelia in 2004 featured the music of Lou Reed. LA LA LA continues to push limits, producing cutting edge performances and inventing nuanced moves which have since been widely imitated by other companies. Some might regard theft as an ultimate compliment but not I . Alongside his genius as a choreographer, Edouard is also a gifted photographer.

POLICE PICNIC Synchronicity Tour, Aug.3, 1983, Stade Olympique Montreal.

The show also included the amazing PETER TOSH, who deserves more than POLICE to be in this exhibit in my estimation, but I couldn’t resist the tacky, off the shoulder shirt and uncharacteristic grimacing of Sting… and I'm running out of both photo paper and time before the exhibit opens on April 3d!
